First recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Bissei' (this changed to 'Bisheye' in the 12th century), Bushey also has evidence of earlier settlements, with several stone age tools being found. The unearthing of Roman villas and tessellated pavements suggests that the area was occupied during the Roman Empire's time in britain. The main road that runs through the town also dates back to the Roman occupation.
